Launch of our stratospheric balloon

Is it a bird? Is it an aeroplane? No, it's a stratospheric balloon from the International Schools in Reinsdorf!

A few years ago, Sido and Andreas Bourani sang about wanting to take off, that nothing keeps them on the ground and that they want to see the world from above in order to float away from the worries of hectic everyday life. What would sometimes be all too desirable, especially nowadays, but only seems to be attainable for a few select astronauts, Reinsdorf's pupils now want to put into practice.

One thing right away, to be honest and stay grounded with the facts: The students of the 11th grade of the International Gymnasium do not want to do this in person. That would probably be a bit too aloof.

Nevertheless, they have big plans. Currently, the geography class of grade 11 is conducting a project on research in the stratosphere. To this end, the students would like to launch a weather balloon from the schoolyard of the International Schools in Reinsdorf at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, 24 May 2022. If everything goes according to plan, the balloon should reach an altitude of 35 to 36 km. It will carry a probe with experiments and recording devices for the science lessons. It is also equipped with a camera that will bring impressive pictures back to earth from breathtaking heights. The probe will be assembled by the pupils themselves in advance on a specially planned project day. During its flight, it will be tracked by GPS signal the whole time so that it can be located and found again after landing. The results will then be evaluated in the coming days in the classroom.

In order to give this extraordinary occasion the appropriate dignified setting within the school day, class 11 has organised a small programme during the lunch break starting at 12.05 pm. Moderation and music from the school radio accompany the start. The flight path can be followed live on an interactive board in the schoolyard. Food and drinks will also be offered.

All interested citizens are cordially invited to the school grounds of the International Schools in Reinsdorf to witness the launch of the stratosphere balloon.

With all the well-organised launch preparations, however, one thing remains exciting right up to the end: Should it not be possible to launch the weather balloon on this day due to unfavourable weather conditions, the alternative launch date is planned for Wednesday, 8 June 2022 at 1 pm. In this case, this will be announced in good time on the homepages of the International Schools Reinsdorf.
