Excursion to the WHZ

As part of the basic physics course, we, class 11 IGR, visited the Westsächsische Hochschule in Zwickau together with class 12, Mr. Becher and Ms. Höfer on 16.10.2023.

After a short introduction about the study options and locations of the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences, the tour continued in two larger groups of Year 11 in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in various rooms. One of the two stations was in the Georgius Agricola Building. After a brief introduction by the staff responsible for us, the first experiments on the topics of current strength, electrical circuits etc. began. We had the opportunity to carry out our own experiments using the modern equipment available there. With the help of short mathematical questions, we were able to improve our knowledge of electronics. In particular, we were presented with devices such as compressors, resistors, spindles, special light bulbs and measuring devices, not all of which we were familiar with from our regular school lessons. After these experiments, the groups swapped once. We moved on to another of the WHZ's many laboratories. There we mainly dealt with IT tasks. In smaller groups, we were asked to create a process using special programs and a camera on a computer. This process showed 3D models (tools) that repaired a 3D printer. At the end, we were even able to project this onto a sheet of paper using the camera.

The trip to the WHZ was very exciting for all of us. We were not only able to put our own knowledge to the test, but also learn new things and get to know areas of work that we were not yet familiar with.
